{"id":530,"date":"2022-09-07T09:45:55","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T09:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/muckton.network\/david-nicholson\/?p=530"},"modified":"2022-09-07T14:53:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T14:53:23","slug":"tobago-cricket-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/muckton.network\/david-nicholson\/travel\/tobago-cricket-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Tobago - Cricket tour with the Captain Scott XI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When my friend Gareth Butler died of a heart attack at the age of 43, he was just about to go on a cricket tour to Tobago with the Captain Scott XI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his memorial service, Sean Reilly from Captain Scott approached invited me to go in Gareth\u2019s place. On the grounds that it\u2019s what he would have wanted, I accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tobago was fabulous. Less developed that Barbados or St Lucia, it has a tumbledown charm, beaches right out of Robinson Crusoe \u2013 some think it was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson\u2019s novel \u2013 and swathes of pristine rainforest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We played a couple of games against local teams, who beat us convincingly but in a friendly, sporting way. We ate pasties, drank rum, swam in the warm seas and partied in elegant villas with our teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing cricket in March was a novelty. We flew straight out of the British winter into Tobago\u2019s balmy tropical heat.
